INSIGHTS / PRACTICAL GUIDE

What makes a Training of Trainers programme practical?

Practical ToT gives participants opportunities to design, facilitate and improve.

Start with the learner’s task

A trainer needs more than confidence in front of a room. They need to understand what participants are trying to do and select activities that build the relevant skills. Clear learning outcomes help make those decisions.

Make practice delivery central

Ask whether participants will prepare and facilitate a session. Practice should have a defined learning goal, an appropriate activity and a way to check understanding. Observation and feedback help a trainer see what the group actually experienced.

Use feedback that can be acted on

Feedback such as “be more engaging” is difficult to use. More useful feedback identifies a specific moment: the instructions were unclear, the discussion lacked a conclusion or the exercise needed more time. The next step is another attempt with a deliberate adjustment.

Connect content with context

Business examples should make sense to the learner. A facilitator may need to adapt an example to a sector or level of experience while preserving the learning purpose and any programme requirements.

Check the pathway beyond attendance

Clarify assessment, practice requirements and any certification or licensing process before joining. Then make a plan to facilitate again. Training skills become more useful when they are applied, reviewed and improved.
